They've threatened to do it before but never went through with it. And have been trying to get it re-negotiated for a while.

Now with that treaty not being followed they could severely limit Pakistan's water supply.

They're probably hoping this is enough to get Pakistan to back off on the state sponsored terrorism, but creating worse conditions for Pakistanis and having it be obvious who made those conditions worse doesn't bode well for peace.

These waters are the kind of thing wars are fought over. And these are two nations with nuclear weapons who have only ever heard tales of nuclear bombs. It's never been reality to them, just numbers.

Even worse . . . India legitimately has enough people to take a nuke on the chin and not feel the devastation. They're not gonna be as deterred by nuclear threats as other nations would.

As an Indian I have strong opinions, but this isn’t the sub for those opinions. I will say, the current Indian government has often been branded as anti-Muslim, but really what it is, is anti-Pakistan. China will of course side with Pakistan as they have historically. However my concern is that Modi might have gotten less aggressive over the last couple years. I am very interested to see how India responds to this. Considering that he probably won’t run again for PM, and that all political parties have actually come together (which is extremely rare), I wouldn’t be surprised if the response is stronger than what many can imagine at this point.

Pakistan is in no position to fight a war but their military leadership which has a heavy influence in their political leadership wants to keep their power and they’re moving towards becoming a failed state. Their ex prime minister is still serving a prison sentence.

I don't think its like the Palestine issue, the Palestinians are being ruthlessly murdered with an extreme power imbalance while almost all the western governments oppose it. Meanwhile, the Kashmir situation is between two nuclear powers that are considered important to the US. Morally, both governments are completely bankrupt so there's no angle to approach there.

It's an ugly situation, especially for the poor people who live in the region, but I don't think it'll lead to a full-scale war because of the aforementioned nuclear weapons. At least, I hope it doesn't....

I Support kashmirs independence.  When the ussr supported the annexation of kashmir it was a kingdom with a hindu ruling class and a Muslim- Buddhist population.  India at the time under nehru was committed to secularism and socialism while Pakistan was not.  So it makes sense the soviets would have supported India in kashmir.

I'm not particularly well read beyond the water share as it relates to a nuclear flashpoint but my understanding is:

India could crush Pakistan easily if it wasn't for intervention from various interests, notably China and Russia. Pakistan is a military state that the people need to be tricked into patriotically supporting, and it knows that war with India would essentially lead to certain death and the complete collapse of their state. There have been worse terror attacks from Kashmir and Pakistan, and the longstanding conflict historically hasn't been able to escalate for these reasons.

Beyond this, quality of life is very poor in either country. Historically both states have utilized the tension to drum up either patriotic support or expanded military budget or both. They also take advantage of Hindu/Muslim friction for the same purposes and to arrest revolutionary movement.

In Kashmir the people are anti-Indian but this has been a matter of principle and mostly nonviolent/passive in the layperson, and is not a reaction to any sort of ethnic domination attempt. While you could say there is a colonial effort being planned by India, India has been very permissive of Kashmir's anti-Indianism. And what's more, Pakistan is wholly a failed state. Kashmir is a part of India and will be absorbed peacefully in time. Pakistan knows this and resists to justify its military rule, outside of the India conflict going so far as to assassinate its prime ministers.

With that passive on-principle Kashmiri rejection of its place in India in mind it's very suspicious when terror attacks are launched against India and Pakistan says it had no hand in them. These are terror attacks supposedly by a Kashmiri resistance to being absorbed by the only state in the region doing somewhat well, in preference of being claimed by the disgustingly dysfunctional Pakistani state. In the past both nations have launched false flag attacks. I don't mean to say that's what's happened here (although I wouldn't be surprised), but I am saying that occasionally escalating tensions is built into the conflict and has benefit to both states.

Insofar as water is concerned, India has wanted the treaty rewritten since its inception. It's very lopsided on behalf of Pakistan, which needs the water for agriculture and drinking and unfortunately manages it like a bunch of complete fucking regards. Because they are. So clearly India suspending the treaty and escalating in these manners, after a terror attack that Pakistan says they had no hand in and that the Kashmiris don't have a stake in beyond rejecting rule by either country but especially the failed state of Pakistan, is motivated by a desire to rewrite the Indus treaty more to their benefit. On the other side Pakistan sees Kashmir as an ideological wound and unfinished business and doesn't even seem to understand its utility as leverage over the water that feeds almost 100% of its agriculture, or they wouldn't be fucking around so much and risking its loss.

If India moved to fully cut off the water (again this would take years of construction to prepare, even with the dams they've constructed already), Pakistani cities run out of water in days. In a month or two crops are gone and power outages begin. Food prices skyrocket and rural migration begins into the cities. At about six months there is massive famine, economic systems dissolve, political collapse or civil war is a serious risk. By the end of the year Pakistan is completely dead as a state. India has never so much as dreamed of doing this because they are not and don't want to be an aggressor in the way the U.S. is, and because foreign intervention via war would destroy them as well. This is all before any nuclear missiles are launched.

The only real way forward for either state is to seek peace but neither will for the reasons mentioned at the beginning of this text. This shit will keep happening until the military dictatorship in Pakistan is destroyed by its people (an intended effect of India's damming projects, and a necessary means to complete their goal of ending the conflict). In the meantime we can take solace in the fact that escalation to full-scale war is and historically has been clearly out of the question for either state.

The communist party of Pakistan, while mostly inactive, was formed in refutation of the military dictatorship. As conditions worsen they have more and more openings for deposing military rule. In our lifetimes we'll see that happen, water will begin to be managed by an actual government, and tensions over sharing the river system will dissolve as though there was never a problem to begin with. That's a safe historical assumption to make on a long enough timeline, assuming drought doesn't affect the water flashpoint which is a certainty on a long enough timeline. Whether Pakistan gets absorbed into India post-revolution is up to those people.

As far as the west is concerned (this is where I'm a little more educated) full-scale war between the nations is out of the question. It's assumed that it would wreck global trade as it's concerned in South Asia, threatening the almighty bottom line. Regional meltdown destroys a key counterweight to China in India and an intelligence asset in Pakistan. The U.S. also enjoys Indian labor outsourcing at a rate of 8 Indian workers to 1 American worker and rising, to say nothing of its billion person economy. Western imperialism needs stability between these two states, in the manner that we know it that is, in order to sustain itself. So we can thank God that there's no risk of a western-backed proxy war like we have in Ukraine and various Middle Eastern and Central American states before it. 

India flooding Pakistan will produce a failed response on the part of the military dictatorship to help the people recover. If we're lucky this will help to further undermine the nationalism that its military rulers hope to sustain in the long-term.

With all that in mind my stance is that the military dictatorship of Pakistan should be overthrown by its people who desperately need a serious government. My stance on India is that once when I was a little boy our mom locked us out by mistake to go on a bender and my Indian neighbors let us in and gave us Oreos until my aunt came and picked us up, and hardly spoke any English at all full stop, so I have a great deal of love for the Indian spirit and wish its people the best as they realize their importance to the western imperialist machinery in the coming years. As a Marxist I want all worker suffering ended and look forward to a better world where games like this stop ruining people's lives over and over and over for money and power.

On the other hand if they have proof Pakistan was involved in the attack they should be revealing it to not look completely unreasonable. I expect they're being completely unreasonable-caused the terrorist attack with their oppression and repression in Kashmir, made high handed and imperious extradition demands to Pakistan, Pakistan refuses possibly due to lack of evidence, but more pertinently out of a perfectly fair "you don't tell me what to do" attitude. I really suspect India is broadly the one in the wrong, as bad as Pakistan is in its own right. Its of course not out of character for Pakistan to be involved in something like this, but clearly India doesn't have proof.

On the real other hand, while I do want there not to be a war, if there is one regardless the internet will be waaaaaaay more entertaining if India loses badly.

Fundamentally Kashmir should be independent. India doesn't need it and clearly its desire for independence is too prolonged and intense to be written off as some subversive op. India blatantly has to govern it as an occupation rather than as a part of its nation

At least China can push back on secessionist movements with "fuck off we literally have the best quality of life of any large country outside Europe that got independence from the West post WW2, you could have it a lot worse". What the fuck can India say?

Unfortunately that time has passed and now Pakistan backs militants in Kashmir for their own benefit.


India is a secular state in theory and having some muslim majority states should not be a problem. India is really big and really populated, there are more Muslims in India than many arab nations combined (over 200 million).


I think as India becomes less secular and Hindutva becomes more popular, I am more sympathetic to Kashmiri voices.


Kashmiris claim they want an independent state but it's not really possible, and really only seeks to benefit Pakistan.


I don't equate Kashmiris to Palestinians, and for the record about 100,000 Hindu Pandits were [exiled from Kashmir](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exodus_of_Kashmiri_Hindus) in the early 90s. (The wiki page for this is really weirdly biased and basically denies this is ethnic cleansing).


India also treats Kashmiris like shit so this doesn't help the situation.


Kashmiris are pawns for Pakistan and India to play with because all either nation cares about is the natural resources and geopolitical importance.


Ultimately it's all a British fuck up, the partition likely killed millions and displaced millions more. If India retaliates with a "show of force" it will only make things worse, but it's not really the same as Palestine unless they start air striking entire towns.

Do you know why the USSR supported India? In 1971, the Pakistani government had launched a genocide against the Bengali people of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Most western powers like the U.S. and UK had supported Pakistan in this by deploying its seventh fleet (task force 74) and the UK the HMS eagle respectively. India tried to help the Bengali people and the USSR help India to liberate Bengalis. The U.S. and EU do not care about India and never have.

Kolkata is spread across multiple districts (Kolkata, North 24 etc). That’s why Kolkata district has lesser GDP than Patna district but Kolkata city has higher GDP than Patna city. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Also, I don’t understand why Centre doesn’t have any plans to connect capitals of all Eastern states by expressways. If connected, a huge economic boom can be achieved due to increase in mutual trade and commerce. Patna and Kolkata expressway doesn’t need to solve any geographical barriers also.
